An occasional hackneyed remark spoiled the originality that made the paper memorable.

if a paper as indicated here is original then it remains memorable as it is unique but the occasional banal=hackneyed=trite=overuse=commonplace=
cliche=unoriginality reflects the antonym that should be in the second place..its antonym i guess
