GRE ARGUEMENT ESSAY OF THE WEEK

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.

A recent study shows that people living on the continent of North America suffer 9 times more chronic fatigue and 31 times more chronic depression than do people living on the continent of Asia. Interestingly, Asians, on average, eat 20 grams of soy per day, whereas North Americans eat virtually none. It turns out that soy contains phytochemicals called isoflavones, which have been found to possess disease-preventing properties. Thus, North Americans should consider eating soy on a regular basis as a way of preventing fatigue and depression.

Of course it is wrong. Soy and fatigue relationship is just correlation, not causation. Unless soy is proven to prevent fatigue and depression, which was not mentioned by the passage, this argument is fallacious.

This argument falls in fallacy due to many reasons.First of all, the purpose of study is not clear. Second, It is not proven that Asians eat 20 grams of soy per day because this Study is not done in Asia, this is simply an assumption.More over, We can find our body essential nutrients in many forms and ways.We get Vitamin A from Milk, eggs, fish etc..Similarly there may be some fruit, vegetable or some form of food which have disease-preventing properties and contains isoflavones(phytochemicals). This Study must have encouraged some R&D in this wayy.

I found the comparison of North American people with Asia itself containing several loop holes as these two countries have different culture and traditions all together. In Asia people have much more family value .They get support from family in case of any problem. In north America people belief in living independently and they could not be able to cope with metal pressure at all that might be leading to the failure. Again the author has not mentioned which population segment he had surveyed. The survey could have been done with sample population which cannot be exact representation of all nation.

This fact is full of assumption and without any statistical data to relate the dietary content of soyabean to health.
One one ingredient of regular food content is taken intto consideration.Other habits of inviduals like regular work outs,non-smoking or even the extent of physical exercise is not taken into consideration.

Soyabean is a good source of protein however its not the sole factor affecting the health of Asian people.
This comparison is bizarre and irrelevant as the age factor of the survey is not considered. The results of male and female population is not shown separately. It doesn't show how many percentage of the people surveyed are regular smokers or have any other vices which causes repercussions on the health.
If two different sets of people having disparate habits are considered for survey without having some similarity in lifestyle is not considered its imperative any conclusion drawn from such a survey will be full of fallacy and is definitely erroneous.

yes their is no connection between soy and fatigue because soy is very healhy food for asians and fatigue should be cured by the soy food eating because the people who eat soy food they are much better in health wise then the people who donot eat the soy food soy contains protiens, vitamins and no fats so many kind of disese are cured by using soy sause, soy food thats way people in asia are more healther then the people of north america or any other country.

the aruement is true that soy sause should be use in daily bases then to aviod totally and even soy items are available in very cheaper rate in foregn country so they need to buy the soy items.

I find this argument correct upto certain extent. As stated in the argument that because of cerain asian diets contain more soy protein that is why they do not suffer from certain diseases, which is true because this is a well know fat that diet affects our health. Many of the researches opine in the favour of the relationship of diet with diseases. Regarding Americans to eat more soy in order to get away from this given disease does make sense upto an extent with consideration of a few limitations i can remember, which includes the ability to assimilate different nutrients in different races. As we all know different races develop changes in there biological framework over the years as an adaptive process for there survival in different geographical areas, so increasing soy in diet only will not help in such cases.Conclusively, I agree with the argument in context to the disease preventing properties of soy protein but I disagree with the statement that says increasing soy in american diet can prevent certain diseases because I personally believe this will only partially affect the health of American population.
