GRE SENTENCE COMPLETION OF THE DAY
Psychologists insist that all people, even the most ——- and ——– , have varying degrees of extreme emotions. (A) celestial — civilized (B) sylvan — intellectual (C) brackish — mature (D) defunct - healthy (E) beneficent — stable
even the most____ and ___ is a statement used for same kind of words, both possitive or negative. It does not state a comparison.
In option A, both words are positive, but no one is likely to be celestial. Well, certainly Charlize Theron is close enogh to be celestial, but she's an aussie, so she can't be civilized;) I'm just kidding, let's get rid of A
Option B: both words are a comparison, and not a good one. I don't think it could be a good option.
Option C: mature makes sense in the phrase. Check it out: The phrase is about vaying extreme emotions. A mature person is supposed to control his emotions, but EVEN them have varying degrees of extreme emotions. Brackish means slightly salty... Ouch! that's a nonsense in the phrase. We get rid of C too
Option D: a defunct is a dead person. Can a dead have any emotions? Definetly no. We get rid of D
The only option available is E... let's check it: Beneficient: doing or producing good Stable: resistant to change of position or condition; firm and dependable; maintaining equilibrium
Both are positive words, that's good news. Stable matches perfectly, and beneficient... not that much, but is the better choice.
