GEOMETRY QUESTION OF THE DAY

Ship X and ship Y are 5 miles apart and are on a collision course. Ship X is sailing directly north, and
ship Y is sailing directly east. If the point of impact is 1 mile closer to the current position of ship X
than to the current position of ship Y, how many miles away from the point of impact is ship Y at this
time?
(A) 1 (B) 2 (C) 3 (D) 4 (E) 5

    cuz the distance 5 mile is da hypotenous distance when u depict the question in the form of a right triangle... x is 1mile from collision point...therefore 1^2+2^2=5... so y is 2mile apart from the collision point...

    the the distance between point of impact to ship y is ,let us assume (x-1)
    now,the distance between point of impact n ship y is x.
    the option tat ssatisfys this condition of pythagoras theorem
    5^2=(x-1)^2+x^2.

    there fore option d satisfys this equation.
    hence,the answer is (d).
